I would tell my first year self that graduate school will present trials and tests beyond anything that I could imagine, but through it all, to stay focused on the why. Faith in your why is what makes you unshakable, and what you have to look to when your immediate surroundings look bleak. Your why is a reminder that no one and nothing can keep you from the entirety of your destiny. I would also emphasize the importance of taking care of myself alongside my science, which is something that I let slip at various points during my 6.5 years. A PhD isn't worth your self.
